Tablet for a young boy

My nephew has been using my older Nook tablet to play games we downloaded/purchased from Barnes and Noble. But now my husband is taking the Nook to work to read on it at lunch hour. So I want to buy my nephew a tablet he can have and play on. It doesn't have to be a Nook, we are starting over so it can be any brand. He is 9 years old and I don't want to put 500.00 into it, but do want a good one for playing the games on it. Is there any you recommend?
