Purchasing computer with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)

[ Edited ]

When I purchased my laptop from QVC 2 years ago, I purchased the model without Microsoft Office because I already had the software on my desktop.

Question:

Back in the "old days", when U purchased a computer and Microsoft Office, it was good for the life of the computer.  However, someone told me that now, when you purchase a computer, once activated, Microsoft Office expires after one year.  Is that true?

Re: Purchasing computer with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, etc.)

I think that the new Office 365 is a subsciption model and that you have to renew every year.

I don't care for the interface / look of the latest Office iteration (we have it at work) so I use OpenOffice on my home laptop.

As an alternative you could look for a prior version of MS Office as 2007 and 2010 should work on a 2 year old laptop, or do like I did and download OpenOffice.

A lot of software is now on a subscription model but there are alternatives.

I have purchased Microsoft Office as late as this spring with a one time purchase for one computer... or you can purchase the one year ''subscription'' .  The one time ''purchase'' costs more in the beginning, but in the long run, it is cheaper....  Check Amazon or anyplace - there are several options for Office

If you bought MS Office separately in the past you can probably install it on your new computer.  I bought Office 97 a looooong time ago and have installed it on my computers, even this new one with Windows 8.1.

My husband bought the new Office and it is a subscription thing.  I don't like it.  He got it at Coscto.  It is like for 2 years for 5 computers or something.   I don't like using it on his laptop.

You can only use Microsoft Office on one computer, and can not transfer the license to another computer.

The Office 97 software you are using no longer gets security updates. Your computer is open to getting attacked by some malware. Your personal information stored on this machine is at great risk.
