I have a dell laptop that is three and a half years old. It has quit working. When I push the on button it clicks but does not light up or come on. I thought the battery pack was gone so I ordered a new battery pack and received it last week. I put it in and the computer worked. I worked with it a few hours and then shut it down. A few days later I went to turn it back on and nothing happened. The on button will click but will not light up or come on. It is the Dell Inspiron N 7010 model that was a TSV in December of 2010. Could you please give me an idea of what might be wrong with it. I don't feel like it should be giving our after only three and half years. I did not use it that much. I thought Dell was better than that.

Two of my Dell computers did the same thing and they couldn't fix it. I stopped buying their junk. I stopped throwing out good money on a Dell. They stink!! period!!!!

It's either a failed power supply or motherboard. Three years is the average lifespan of a notebook computer. They run hot compared to a desktop and that causes hardware failures. It isn't cost effective to repair a notebook computer. Good news, you get to buy a new one.

Try this:

Unplug everything.

Take out the battery.

Hold down the power button for at least 30 seconds.

Plug it back in (without the battery) Try to turn it on.

Then put the battery back in.

It worked for me.

YouTube has a ton of videos which can help you diagnose and fix problems. Before I watched these videos a few months ago I thought that this was a complicated area of expertise, only for the most skilled professionals could handle. After watching how easy it is to diagnose hardware problems and how simple the fixes are for them, I no longer view this as rocket science. See for yourself. Most parts just plug into slots inside your computer. Techniques to diagnose problems were matter-of- fact, step-by-step jobs. Check it out.

I agree. It is a great time to look for a new computer. Is is the end of the month, the end of a business quarter, and a holiday next week. There should be quite a few sales on all the major computer companies web sites.
