Photo import trouble

I have a Canon powershot elph and a MacBook Air, I am having trouble importing pics. Tried to find some info but I am not so good at this tech world! Had no trouble importing from my Motorola so not sure what the problem is....

THe photos are in my camera.

Remove the SD card from your camera.

Insert it into the SD slot on your MBA.

Double click on the icon that appears on your desktop.

Double click the DCIM folder.

Move pictures to your desktop.

NOTE: If the photos you moved to your desktop still appears inside the DCIM folder, you can delete to make more storage in your camera.

I would suggest you import them using either iPhoto or Photos. No need to clutter up your desktop when you have a software program designed to do the job.
