Nook & Kindle Question

Both of these have "new" lines with HD and new, improved features. For those of you that already have them, please answer:

(1) Can you access the internet with these? Not just the sites to buy books from Amazon or Barnes & Noble, but the complete internet. It would be convenient to have one single device to do so.

(2) If you can, do you need a data plan with it like on a smartphone?
