I have a MacBook Air. 10.15.7....Catalina.
All of a sudden I quit receiving a tone when I had mail.
I have checked all I know to check, searched the web for an answer and have restarted several times..still no tone. Any advice? thank you

@felinemom ..If I muted it, I don't know how I did it or where to unmute!
In MAIL...PREFERENCES I have a tone selected. I can hear the tone on each choice but no tone when I get mail.
Where would the mute button be?
I checked, and I did not mute the volume..still stumped.

I have an IPad. The way mine works is to go to settings, then notifications, then you have to push the green button to the right to get sounds on. You may have to do this for every application that you want sound notifications. Not sure if your Apple product works the same way.

@chessylady I think I just figured it out...there is a 'unmute selected conversations' tab...I clicked on it and low and behold tones are back.
Now the next question is how did it get switched off? I never go into setting and change things and I am the only one that uses this Mac Book!

Well...that did not work....email just came in an no tone for notification. Back to square one.

You can also google your question and sometimes find an answer, also do the same on Youtube, something like " how can I get sound notifications for email on my macbook."

@Mom2Dogs If you are still having issues, here are a few suggestions you may wish to try......
**You can Safe Boot and/or boot up as a new user to check your Mail notification sound to confirm if the issue is in YOUR admin or system wide or not.**

In the screen shots check these settings .

Run Disk Utility & restart your computer afterwards.

Your sound preference may be corrupted. Trash the sound.plist preference file.
Your name>Library>Preferences>com.apple.systemsound.plist
The preference file will be recreated.

Last resort: Download & install the COMBO update from Apple's Download software website (NOT the App Store) of whichever version of Catilina you are using.
Run Disk Utility after the installation is complete & restart your computer afterwards.
If none of the above works, strongly suggest that you CALL Apple if you are still under warranty and/or have AppleCare.
OOW: Post in Apple's forum - MacOS Catalina. The experts there will sort it all out for you.

@Mz iMac Thanks for the reply and visuals...I have been thru some of what you suggested. I have not done the safe reboot/start up as new user...which I have never done those steps...tends to strike fear in my heart if I would do something wrong!! I will try to trash the sound preference.
I might call Apple, and we do have a genius bar in the Apple store at the mall...I appreciate the help.

I swear I have a gremlin in my mac sometimes. The same thing has happened to me and I have no clue how I muted it. There are a lot of shortcuts using the keypad so I assume I hit two that caused it at some point.
