Yes but it's better to buy your own and pay one price up front. Leasing a modem from Comcast is expensive. It's always better to buy your own.

Thanks! I'll review my billing statement closer and see what they R charging. I hate Comcast. Pay $100/month, I do, and get basically very little. I could go on & on. My least favorite company.

I'm not even sure it's Comcast that's the problem. I've had both Comcast and UVerse in Florida. - Almost the sane kinds of problems with both, some technical, some, billing/financial/service.

In the North, I have a "choice" of Cablevision by Optimum or no service. Again, I see technical issues as well as service issues.

I swear the geeks in the background have made the service and billing software so complicated that no one can train their rotating staff well enough to understand it!

Didn't mean to throw the thread off. I'm going to investigate my modem and router both. Optimum supplies them for a charge; might well buy my own.

Comcast charges $10 a month here ($120 a year) and I bought a new, faster one for $70. I had the old modem (I owned it) for more than 7 years and not a single problem.

I bought a Motorola Surfboard SB6121. I did a speed test and I'm getting 30 mbps download and 6 mbps upload.

And here I feel like I am in heaven when I went from 1.5mbps to 7mbps download and .80mbps uploads. The 1.5 was the max available for my area for several years now. I think some time soon I may be able to get 12mbps download speed, but I ain't gonna hold my breath.

And Centurylink has TV ads showing 1gbps download speeds. I wonder who gets those and how much it costs for it.

I did not have trouble either. I had my last one for 5 years. I brought a new cable modem in June, a Zoom 5431J. I usually go out to DSL Reports, Comcast internet Forum, and see what is the best running modem for my market.

In my area of NJ, Verizon is selling this level of DSL service for $25 a month.

Re: New modem makes a difference

Do you have phone, internet, and tv with comcast? Does the modem you bought support all three? I've wanted to purchase my own modem so I can stop being charged monthly for the fee comcast charges for theirs, but the modems I have looked at in the stores don't support phone. Just tv and internet. So I would still need another device from comcast for the phone,,which doesn't help me escape the monthly fee. So I stay with the comcast modem until I can find one that supports all three.

You should go to Comcast Service center and ask can you buy a retail VOIP modem in your market. Some areas customers are allowed to buy and others no. You need to ask where to buy. They will tell you the name of the store and the brand of the modem.

I found a recent thread from a Comcast forum. The person talking is an expert. http://forums.comcast.com/t5/Voice-Service-and-Equipment/Telephony-Modem/m-p/2332283#M22646

No, I don't have the triple play. If you do, the modem required is different than what I bought.

Good for you glb613 for doing the research, finding out about the faster modem and installing it yourself. How very clever of you. I m going to look into this myself. Thank you and have a nice day!Wink
