New modem makes a difference - Page 3

You're welcome. I got an e-mail from Comcast about my modem and they provided a list of compatible modems. I clicked on the link, check out the ones with the 3 star ratings and decided to go with the Motorola SB6121. My previous modem is a Webstar and it worked fine until it couldn't handle the higher speed or bandwidth. I also replaced my wireless router a couple of years ago and with a "N" version. I didn't realize how slow my internet was until I replaced the modem.

I keep getting a similar message from Cox and they'll even provide the modem, which they're already doing. I keep putting it off as I figured it was just a gimmick of some sort, but now I'll look into it... Is it safe to assume that if you don't replace your router you have to reconfigure your wireless to the new modem and if so how much of a pain is that likely to be?

I do have the bundle and Comcast did offer the Wi-Fi and the modem with free installation and a very small rental fee each month. The link is xfinity.com/internethelp for more information.

It does make your computer run faster.. I have been putting it off too but, I am very pleased with the new modem and Wi-Fi from Comcast.

You don't need to reconfigure the router.

You're welcome. If you ever do replace your router, give the new router the same name an security number. You need to get into the router settings to do this but it's easy. By giving the router the same name and security number, you don't have to reconnect all of your wireless devices.

You're on a DSL connection, right? I was getting 1.2/300Kbps speeds when I was on Verizon DSL during a period of financial retrenchment. That was the maximum I was able to get because of my distance from their "Central Office" which was about 2 miles away in the next town over. Your distance from the Central Office of your DSL supplier is the determining factor for DSL speeds. The only increase in speeds would happen if they started replacing the copper lines with fiber.

These faster speeds that everyone is mentioning are on cable broadband. My speed at the moment is 18/5MBps with cable. If you've got a cable provider in your area, check to see what they offer as their lowest tier of broadband service. You'll get better speeds that way, if your budget can handle it. They also usually provide a phone service option, so they might offer a bundled option that is priced well.

. I too have Comcast triple play like you and tried to find the new modem everywhere. Most modems do not have enough inputs. I ended up getting it from Comcast. The guy at Comcast told me that Costco is the only place that sells the triple play modem! And apparently the Comcast store sells them. Best Buy no longer sells Comcast gear. I hate Comcast.

You may want to go to DSL Reports Comcast forum internet and post your problem. You will get some help. You can ask about putting a cable modem in Bridge mode. I would not say you hate Comcast. Your post will be tagged a rant, and you have equipment concerns.
