Need hookup advice/help for HDTV, Directv, PS3 and surround sound system!!!!

Not technically savvy, and searching Google for answers is only confusing me even more so any help and advice on an easy, cost-effective way to construct a home theater is greatly appreciated.

My husband and I will be purchasing our first HDTV and want to buy a Playstation 3 console because he is a gamer and it can be also used to play blu-ray discs, DVDs and can stream movies from Netflix. We also want to add surround sound to the mix. So, is it possible to get the same quality sound by adding a surround sound speaker system (without an added blu-ray or DVD player) and is setup easy and what cables are needed for hookup? Please note that we will be upgrading our Directv Satellite console to HD as well.
