Need help with info on buying blu ray player for hubby

Last December we bought the Mitsubishi 3-D ready tv for my husbands family room (I have the formal room with my own tv and blu ray!!).

We bought our son the PS3 for Christmas last year and that is what hubby watched blu ray movies on in the family room. Since fall, our son moved to college and took the PS3 with him so hubby needs a blu ray player. I want to buy him one for Christmas but there are so many choices. I have some questions (he would know but I want it to be a surprise!)

1. Do I have to buy a player that is also 3-D capable or is the tv enough?

2. I'd like to get one that he can also connect to the net to stream movies. I see them out there but dont know which brand/kind to get.

3. Will any brand be compatible with our Mitsubishi?

I have been reading reviews all morning on Amazon and they are sooo confusing because each brand/type have good and bad reviews!
