I agree. I purchased the 1st gen Kindle Fire and recently had a synch issue, which the techs were able to fix. However, while I was waiting for tech, I thought that if the unit could not be save, I'd purchase the unit Pat has. Have read lots of good about it.

I have Kindle Fire and a Nook tablet. The one I use the most? My Kindle 2nd generation! I love this one, easiest to use, just click a button to turn page, no swiping. It will be a sad day when it bites the dust.

If you are only using it to read, hands down the paper white. If you want to use it for other things the newest HDX is wonderful. Happy shopping

I have a Kindle Fire, it's not the latest version, but it's great for my uses. I'd highly recommend it!

I just replaced my Kindle Keyboard with the Kindle Paperwhite. I love it! I like the fact that it has the light behind it. My old Kindle didn't have that, but I had the cover with the built-in light. If you just want it for reading I would suggest the Paperwhite.

I had owned around 50 or so tablets before the HDX and I actually bought the Kindle Fire HDX 8.9 with the intent of hating it and writing a negative review. I have always been against proprietary tablets.
I was wrong. The HDX 8.9 is one of the best all around tablets out there. My Amazon review actually started out with me admitting I bought it to hate it. The Amazon Android takes a little getting used to, but compared to the original Fire and the Nook tablet it is not crippled in the least. You can do anything on it you could with any other tablet. I still recommend them for people looking for a media tablet.

Comparing a Kindle Fire to a Kindle Fire HDX is not really fair. The Kindle Fire HDX is awesome.
My mom has the Kindle Fire and I have had the Kindle Fire HD and the Kindle Fire HDX. There are awesome leaps in improvements with each model.
The Kindle Fire HDX does everything.
OP: Do you just want this just for reading or do you want to do everything? I'd get the Paperwhite if you want it only for reading.
If you want it to do everything, the HDX is the best. However in a month or two, they will probably be coming out with a new model. You might want to hold off a month or two and see what comes out. AND the HDX models will go on sale. They are already having sales on and off now.
