Good morning! I have a older HP computer that goes black when I unplug it . I was thinking it was the battery so I took the battery out and put it back in still having the same problem works fine when plugged in .. is it worth it to get a new battery? Any ideas what this could be? TIA.

If it's too old to get Windows updates then, no it's not worth buying a new battery for it. How old is your HP? @apple1964

It sounds like a laptop. What operating system is it? windows 7, Vista, something else?
Most likely it is the battery or charging cable. Best to just use it at home plugged in. I wouldn't invest any money into a dinosaur. Use it until it dies.

I have the same issue with an old HP. The battery no longer holds a chrage. I just leave it plugged in because I don't need it to be portable.
If you need a portable system, then you can look into the costs of getting a replacement battery Vs the costs of getting a new computer and weigh all the pros and cons.

That's good that it updates. A new battery would cost less than a new laptop, by far. @apple1964
