My iPad 3 locked up last night while opening Words with Friends. I couldn't do a hard shutdown or reset. I closed the cover, let it set for 15 minutes and it was fine. It almost locked up again this morning trying to open WWF. I think my problem is the app not the device.

I agree, it did the same to my iphone 5. No problems after i deleted it.

Does anyone know why an iPad would freeze up. I have held both buttons down and it unfreezes but then it will do it again. I have even deleted all sites accessed. Is their a solution? Thank you.

It would be helpful to know which iPad you're using, which version of iOS, and when you see this problem occurring (what are you doing when it happens?).

I've been using the 3rd generation iPad for over 1 1/2 years (also the iPhone 5 for over a year, and the 3G for several years prior to that). I seldom see the screen-freeze problem, but I know it's been reported before.

In general, you might want to go to your settings and clear history, cookies and website data occasionally. The tech experts in general seem to feel closing out the apps running in background don't affect performance (though there's still disagreement about that), but closing those won't be harmful.

I know it's frustrating. Best of luck to you in resolving this.Smile

Glad to see someone with knowledge thinking it's the app. Same thing happens on my Kindle Fire- but just with one app, so I'm thinking it's that app, but I will call Kindle tech and get their advice.

Since it appears to be happening on multiple platforms, you might also want to talk with the app's developers on their support page. Or ask about it on their Facebook page -- I checked quickly, and it appears they're very active there, answering questions and resolving problems:

When I had a problem with freezing, I was able to narrow it down to just happening when one of my apps was in use. Either I was using it, or it was open in the background. So pretty much narrowed it down to that app. I deleted the app from my iPad, and downloaded it again from the cloud. Worked like a charm. No problems with freezing.

Long trouble-shootings but I hope one shall work for you:

My iPad is NoT freezing up but surely though it seems that it is possessed sometimes. There are galore of posts in Apple forums about the above "booboo" but "my friends" at Apple seems to care not about us a lot, a small example: https://discussions.apple.com/thread/5280272?tstart=0
