This is so disturbing to me and I am sorry your mother had to go through this ordeal of being hacked.  There is an evil side of technology because of  terrible people who prey on others. I have experienced being hacked and know so many people who have been also.  I hope your mother doesn't have any further issues.

@Icegoddess    She doesn't belong to any groups.  I asked after reading your post to make sure.  She's not friends with a whole lot of people either, mainly family, old work colleagues and ladies from church.  She said they were in her regular feed.  I'm thinking one of these people may also didn't know what was going on?

I do remember in the past whenever she's sent facebook messages letting them know someone has copied her pictures and sending her friends friend requests, she says it's days before they answer by taking it down.

Thank you though for your response.  This has made both of us a nervous wreck.

Gosh that seems like such a waste Smiley Sad  Remove the hard drive and install another one. When the HDD is gone, so is ALL the info ever put on that machine.  If it's not a DIY for you, the computer shop can do it.  A new HDD is a whole lot less than a new computer.

Yes, we're definitely taking it to the computer shop.  I'd never know how to go about removing all that stuff.

I do appreciate your thoughtfulness and response.😊💝

@spiderw   I'm so sorry it happened to you before.  It's such a scary, vulnerable feeling.

Thank you so much for your kind words.  I really do appreciate your taking the time to respond.😊💝

@cheriere  I would get some software on the computer like mccafee that is supposed to safeguard against viruses if that is what is going on here. I don't have FB but seems like it can cause many issues apparently. I hope you get it figured out for her. Maybe she could watch Hulu or Netflix instead, lol.

There is no reason FB wouldn't allow you to change a password unless you shut down her account.  There is always access to profile, passwords, etc.  There is a security section of the website that should be able to help.

I didn't shut it down.  I don't use facebook, so I'm not even sure about how to go about doing it.  She said she sent facebook messages about these videos.  However, she claimed she couldn't change her password whenever she tried.  Maybe she was just too rattled at the time and hit something wrong.  I don't know.  But for now, we're not using that computer.  I'm almost afraid if she goes to get on facebook with the other laptop she has, it may get hacked too.

@cheriere

I haven't read the other posts so I apologize if this is a repeat.  Unless the problem with Facebook is fixed, she'll have the same problems on ANY other device she uses it on!  There are privacy settings that have to be done but they're hard to understand if you aren't familiar with Facebook.   There are so many scams on there that if you don't have a suspicious mind, you can get in big trouble.  I hate to say it but she shouldn't be on Facebook.

I'm glad you're taking it to a computer shop. There is a lot to know about all the various components in a computer and what will and won't play nicely together.

Big Box store computers are stuffed full of bloatware, some brands more than others. And some bloatware is more vulnerable than others.  Do you think you could talk mom into staying off of Facebook?

@cheriere Oh no! This is terrible. Thanks for the warning and I hope you and your mom can get everthing figured out and no harm is done! Good luck!

@cheriere - It’s crazy how many scammers are out there just waiting to take advantage of people!! They especially target seniors who may not be as computer savvy or aware of this increasingly common problem. It’s becoming difficult to weed out bogus ads, calls, and emails. These con artists steal logos to make things look legitimate. I saw on a news show that this has become an extremely profitable “business” bringing in millions to these scammers. My friend’s MIL lost the majority of her retirement savings as she entered the early stages of dementia. It really is sickening!

I hope you are able to fix this situation. Your bank isn't going to want to continue replacing your accounts. She will have to stop using Facebook.

Please ask your bank about extra security measures to use with your accounts.
