@cheriere

You're throwing the entire brand new computer in the trash? That sounds a little extreme. If you can't do it yourself, a computer shop can clean out your registry or just wipe the entire hard drive clean. Wiping clean a hard drive is not that difficult. Does the computer have a backup Drive? Or do you have an external backup drive that you might want to save pictures to? I would not throw the entire brand new computer away, oh my! Taking it to a computer shop and telling them what happened will be a whole lot easier and a whole lot less expensive.

I haven't read all the replies but two important things are virus protection software and on Facebook make sure to make your friend list private, otherwise someone can make a fake account with your name and try to "friend" your friends pretending to be you.

@Marp    Thanks for that idea.  I could do this and maybe she could just use it ONLY for watching Netflix.

However, I'm gonna be giving her my new iPad and just picking up another one.  Hopefully, this will help a bit with some problems.

She's only 73.  We basically grew up together lol.  But I am going to give her my iPad, it's the same one they're presenting today, and just get another one.

This could've just as easily happened to me.  I wouldn't have thought someone could hack in from videos on facebook.

HP Computer Scam Calls

You didn't follow up w/any of the recommendations/suggestions mentioned?

No, she did receive this scam call whenever she first got the computer.  But she didn't give them any money or information.  She'd been hacked one other time though in January.  It seems like this computer has given her nothing but trouble.  I feel like a jerk because I bought it for her.😟

Yeah, she doesn't have a lot of friends on there and never accepts people she doesn't know, but her list isn't private.  That may help.  I know she and most of her friends have went through people pretending to be one another lots of times.  They always send messages to the account they know is real asking if they set up a new one.

Thank you for thinking of this.  I never would've thought to consider her making her list private.💝

@monicakm    Luckily, she doesn't have any pictures even on this computer...other than what she has on facebook.  I'd hate to get rid of the computer altogether, but I don't want to chance it getting hacked again.  If it is used after being taken to the repair shop, it'll only be to watch movies.

@cheriere, no reason to feel like a jerk or blame the computer.  Your mom is an unsophisticated internet user that is too trusting.

You should spend some time educating her about what to look out for when online.

I've tried reporting a few videos to FB that are obviously porn from the picture shown and they don't seem to think it goes against their standards.  No, I didn't watch them, only going by the pic.  But, I'm always finding videos in groups that obviously have nothing to do with the subject matter in the group.  I always report those to Admin, but some group Admins are more diligent than others about their group's content.

I've gone the route of requriing all posts being approved by me before posting to keep that sort of stuff out of my groups. I know it's a pain for the person posting since I always hate it when it happens to me, but I understand it's the best way to keep that kind of stuff out of the groups and keep them enjoyable.

Luckily, I never get videos like that in my feed, but I would know better than to watch them.  I can tell by the type of title OP mentioned that it's Click Bait.  And, I don't watch the Reelz that people post either.  In fact, I have them hidden as well as those sponsored posts in the top right corner.  I use a special app for that, but it only works on the computer, not on tablets or phones.

I like Facebook, particulary for it's Groups, but you can't just click on anything.  And I'm not saying it is without faults.  Some sort of glitch on FB got me blocked from a gardening group I was in and I can't get back in.

@cheriere I'm on FB a lot and I'm having a hard time understanding how these videos appeared in her newsfeed.  I never get any videos out of nowhere in my feed.  They mostly show up in the different Groups.   The only thing I get in my Newsfeed that doesn't come from Friends or from a Group I'm in or Page I Follow are Sponsored Posts, and I usually also have those hidden by the app I use above although it sometimes fails and then I'll see one.  Are you sure the videos are not coming from a Group she's joined?  You don't have to go to the Group page to see posts in the Group.  Facebook will push them to her in her NewsFeed.  In fact, most of the videos that I have reported to Facebook or Group Admins were ones that were pushed to my Newsfeed by Facebook.

Gosh that seems like such a waste Smiley Sad  Remove the hard drive and install another one. When the HDD is gone, so is ALL the info ever put on that machine.  If it's not a DIY for you, the computer shop can do it.  A new HDD is a whole lot less than a new computer.
