what can you tell me about MacKeeper, Advanced Mac cleaner and Megabackup? I did some research and none of them seem to be Apple products as far as I can tell.
these 3 things have appeared out of nowhere on my computer, uninvited and unwanted and I can't seem to get rid of them.
I didn't download or solicit any of these programs.

I'm not sure how they could have ended up on your computer without you knowing. I can't install any programs without putting in my admin password first and allowing it.
Here's a link on how to uninstall mackeeper

@jaxs mom, I did it, now I'll just have to see if they return. I did not install them and I don't know why they mysteriously appeared, but I hope they are permanently gone now.
thanks for your advice.

To avoid future popups, go to your browser(s) Preferences & use its "Block Popups" option.
Download & install Ad Blocker. It's free! https://adblockplus.org/
Download Malwarebytes and/or DetectX to check for malware. Both utilities are free.
If you DO NOT use El Capitan, repair permissions and restart your comp.

Do you have your firewall turned on? It's under System Preferences/Security & Privacy.
I do run adblockplus on Safari.
Also go into System Preferences/Users and Groups and make sure you have yourself set as Admin, have an admin password and click the lock at the bottom left corner once you do. That will make it so no apps/programs can be installed without entering your admin password.

@jaxs mom, oh wow! I didn't have my firewall turned on! I don't know why or how that happened. I don't remember ever turning it off.
I do have myself as system admin and I installed adblock.
thanks again.

I'm so glad I read this thread. I didn't realize my firewall wasn't turned on for my MacBook Air. I just changed the settings to turn it on. I wonder why it wouldn't have been set that way as the default setting.
