Laptops and Kids---Durable Enough???

I want to get a computer for my 8 year old and 4 year old daughters. My husband is concerned that a laptop will not be as durable as a desktop computer (i.e., CD/DVD slot). What do you all think? I don't have a great budget, but I want to make sure I get a good computer that will last as long as possible. Thanks in advance for any help. I am so not a tech person.
