ICloud Question

Question about how iCloud works with email. I have iPad and iPhone. My one email account is set up on both. Here's the thing, when I read and delete a message on either the iPad/iPhone it doesn't mark read or deleted on the other device. Do I need to set up mail in iCloud to make this happen? Also, will setting up mail in iCloud take much of my free storage up?
