Laptop has been shutting off randomly for no reason. Does this sound like a Virus?

Sounds like it could be your battery. Five years is a good run for any device nowadays as they are not made to last longer then four years. This told to me by a tech. Could be a virus too? Not sure.. maybe someone will chime in with something more.

Thank you for your reply. I did think that was a long time for the laptop to last.  I might check into getting a new one! .  Man Happy

It could be from overheating.  Are the vents on the bottom of the machine.  If so, use it on a solid surface, not your lap. I'd also recommend you vacuum the air vents and clear any lint which might be restricting air flow.

Use it while plugged in.  If it doesn't shut off, you know it's your battery.

I would use it plugged in for as long as I could before I replaced it.....unless you really want a new one.

Thank you! I do use it plugged in much of the time. It still shuts down randomly!

That is a classic sign it's overheating.

If you aren keen to buy a new one now, you can use while it's plugged in.  I did that with my old laptop and it worked just fine for another 2 years.

@CherryHugs

Just saw this article:

There apparently is a flash drive for $34 that one can plug in and takes over for the “old” computer!
