I take care of my mom, who has trouble seeing and cannot work any kind of computer, laptop, etc. Would the Kindle Fire HD 8.9 32 - on sale today, be able to do internet browsing and receive e-mail? Many of my mom's relatives send her pictures and messages and I saw that with an HDI cable I could put them on the tv if the Kindle Fire could handle the internet and email ok. Any information would be appreciated.

Yes, you can do all that.

I also take care of my mother who is 86 and got this for her. I don't know how tech savvy your mother is but I feel this was a waste of money for my mother. My mother will play games on the Kindle but only if I'm sitting beside her and helping her. She wants to learn how to use it, but frankly she is not good with anything electronic. I feel bad for her because she wants to learn but I'm not sure she is capable.

Thanks for the replies. My mother will not be able to use the Kindle (or any type of computer or tablet), but if I can at least sit with her and put the pictures on the television, she will be able to see them. Also, if I can download the newspaper from her hometown, she will be able to look at some familiar news, obituaries, etc. The screen on the tablet and laptop are just not large enough for her to read...but if I can put it on the tv, she will be able to. Someone had said for the internet, email, etc... the Kindle would not work; yet it seems as though you can search the web, etc. without any problem.

That's totally not true. It is very easy to set up your email account. It works fine for the internet too. You can hook the HD up to your TV easily with the proper cord. Be sure and get a long one if your TV is very far from where you will be sitting. I got mine on Amazon for really cheap.
P.S. You can't use the cord with the Kindle HDX model.

You can then use this tablet with an HDTV.On 2/7/2014 TyZach said:Thanks for the replies. I got this Kindle for my mother but guess who is using it, me! She was interested at first but not really anymore. I have an iPad Air so really didn't need this, but I do like it. My mother seems to stick with her puzzle books and deck of cards!

I wonder do they have puzzles for the Kindle HD. Your mom may surprise you after all.

I did download a solitaire app and search word puzzle one. She'll do it as long as I'm sitting next to her. I don't have the time to sit with her to do all the puzzles and card games she wants. I also just got an e-mail that the new Kindle is going to be a TSV. It annoys me that if I had waited maybe not even a month for $40 more I could have gotten the latest model!

Didn't you get the bigger Kindle? I doubt the bigger newest Kindle HDX is only $40 more.
