Is Android OS upgradable?

Does anyone know if it's possible to upgrade a device with the newer versions as they become available? As we purchase 2.1 or 2.2 and 3.0 comes out, will we be able to download this version to our tablets (like the Nextbook?)... I realize at the rate technology is changing, once you purchase something, a new version is avail in a couple of months!
