Re: Ipad as a replacement laptop

Like BootLvr, I have an IPad and I love it, but it doesn't take the place of a laptop. I had to give my laptop to a grandchild recently because his died and the need was immediate. I miss it terribly, and the IPad, while nice to own, is nowhere near the laptop.

Given a choice of either it would be a laptop every time. Waiting for my new one to come in - hope it gets here soon. Ordered another Mac. I much prefer it to my original PC's.

Re: Ipad as a replacement laptop

The iPad is great. It's still not there as a "replacement." It's fine if your lifestyle no longer requires one. If you actually have to work with one, no. Some tasks still require a keyboard and mouse. There is a lot of stuff I can do on my ipad, but I still Microsoft Office, for example. And productivity software will not work on an ipad.

If you are a retiree who just wants to shop, surf, watch media and send emails, then it's OK.

But if you really need the laptop, get that first.

Re: Ipad as a replacement laptop

Thanks for all the advice. I find my Ipad to be too slow when it comes to accessing the internet. It's too slow and small and I get impatient. I don't want another big laptop. Maybe I'll invest in a smaller size, i.e. a 14 or 15 inch. I like my Ipad for some things, but for internet shopping and paying bills, I like a laptop. But in the meantime if I need to pay a bill I'll know the Ipad is just as safe.

It is not you tablet, but your internet connection. (You need to plug in your laptop to the cable modem with an ethernet cable.) This is a site to check your speed http://www.speedtest.net/ . You should compare this number with the connection speed listed on your cable or DSL bill.

You should bring your iPad close to your wireless router, and see what the connection speed is like.

You should contact your cable or DSL company about your slow speed. You may have to replace your cable/DSL modem and wireless router.

Re: Ipad as a replacement laptop

My laptop sits unused for months at a time. I'm totally in love with my iPad. I may never have another computer; don't really need one unless the occasion should arise where I have to write a business letter. I'm constantly amazed at what this thing can do.

iPad won't have a disk drive or a USB port.

Sorry, a bit off topic, but is only the ipad "secure" to pay bills online or are all tablets such as the samsung secure too?

I brought an item from My Habit last week on a Samsung tablet just with a browser. If I needed to do banking, or pay a major bill I would need an app.

Get an app from your bank.
