Ipad and Kindle synching question

Any ipad /Kindle experts out there? I have a problem I can't figure out...

I have a Kindle Fire and an Ipad. I read with the Kindle on my stationary bike. When done I set a bookmark on the last page read, close the book and turn off the Kindle. BTW--the Kindle has the wifi on. When I turn on the ipad and go to the Kindle app and open the book the bookmark is not there and it does not synch to the last page read. The ipad also has wifi and 4g.

what am i doing wrong??? How in the world do I get these 2 to synch with each other?
