File association error. Need help

Hubby called me to help him on his computer. He wanted to save a portion of something he found on MSN. It would have been over 5 pages. I copied and pasted to Word (office 10). Next think I knew he wanted more help since he could no longer open his comcast email without Word loading. He tried it with comcast, aol, yahoo. Word loaded first.

I figured it was an association problem and I really did not know how to fix it. So I used system restore and it is all fixed.

However, I am curious and always willing to learn.

Does anyone know what may have happened. (use google and explorer) And how to fix or unlink what seemed to be associated accidentally.

I cannot ask you know who, who will want to come over and build me a new computer (always wanting to do the extreme).
