OK, so here is a dilemma: we are traveling overseas and want to stay in touch with our family. We switched from At&T where we had an "international add" on to Consumer Cellular. Their fees are 30 cents per call, 10 cents per text and 25 cents for data. If there is free wifi I could connect and use Google or Skype. Any other suggestions?

Use wifi and use it at hotels and restaurants that have wifi. Don't use data and make sure your phone is on the local wifi.

@Deanie, you might want to post this in the Travel Forum. Lots of experience and advice there. LM

@Deanie Agree with @Lilysmom. Check over on the Travel Forum. The subject has been talked about quite a bit. One of the best apps I know about is WHATSAPP. It is free and you can stay in contact with your family and friends without cost.
There are a lot of international travelers on that forum with plenty of suggestions. ![]()

Ever since I got very sick and needed a doctor while in England, I travel with a smart phone and an international plan. I've used data to look up information and with my GPS app. I use the phone calls/texting part of the plan to communicate with fellow travelers or people back home. While I do use the free Wifi when avaliable, there are plenty of times when it isn't.
I have Verizon and the internal plan I use is an extra $40 for the month. I would never rely on free Wifi while traveling again. Too many things can go wrong and I want to be able to use my phone no matter where I am located at the time.

@glb613, I do the same. I want to be able to use my phone in an emergency or when we are on the road. My preference these days is driving as opposed to flying if we can do it.
I am in Canada. When I travel to the US, I use Roam Mobility. LM

I'll be in Canada on a trip the end of May. I'm going to be on a combination train/motorcoach vacation to the Candian Rockies and in some remote locations. What is Roam Mobility and would I be able to use it in that location?

@glb613, here is a link for Roam Mobility.
If this gets deleted, google them. I use them for phone service when I travel to the US. I bought a SIM card from them locally and paid online for the dates I wanted. If you use the SIM card once a year, you don’t have to buy a new one. You can just top up.
This service was cheaper than any other plan I could find at the time. Our cell service in Canada is more expensive than yours so you may want to check other suppliers out. I have used it without issue for several years. Mostly for travel to Florida, South Carolina and all along the eastern USA.
The service I saw based in Vancouver, BC. LM
