Installing a program on my Mac

I have a question about installing a new program. I want to use Audacity to record radio programs. I downloaded the file, unzipped it and I'm not sure how to proceed. I haven't installed very many programs (mostly games from Big Fish which is handled by the game manager) but I know it's different from Windows. Do I drag the folder to Applications? I tried opening the folder and dragging the icon to Applications but it won't run and I get an error message.

If there is a better way to record a program, let me know. Thanks.
