In addition to playing music, answering questions, setting alarms and timers, giving news, weather and sports Alexa can control smart appliances, give an exercise workout, give traffic reports, translate, make shopping lists, interact with Google Calendar, read a book to you, play games with you, locate nearby businesses, place Amazon, Uber, Domino's, flower orders, find recipes--the list of what Alexa can do grows almost daily and you don't even have to be near your computer.

@Marp  That is all fine and good...that saying, I could do all those things just fine without Alexa.  If she could clean bathrooms herself....now that might be the deal breaker!

Re: I Got A Stupid Alexa!

[ Edited ]

@BalletBabe  I have looked for "my buddy" and "ask my buddy" in the android playstore and can't find the app.  Is this an Apple app?  If so, my mom does have an apple phone so she will still be able to get it.

Thanks!

EDIT:  I found it.  It is under "skills" under the Echo app.  Thanks again!!!

Well, you're all ahead of me.  I've never heard of Alexa.

@Annabellethecat66, is that how you get soap info so fast?  Like when we were talking about Ron Moss the other day.

@Mmsfoxxie No!  I buy all of the stupid magazines (but you know that).  No.....I go on the internet and google the exact question we all would ask and up pops whatever it is I want to know.

Something interesting.  I knew this but it still wigs me out.  So the other day I was googling something we all wanted to know about and right on the front page was our QVC comments....yepper for the world to see!  I knew that but still....it doesn't bother me because once you put it down, it's there forever....just .... well.

I wish I could ask her stuff and have her respond.  I showed my daughter when she was here.  Remember, I told you I bought her one and her's does everything....

Typical of my daughter (she has my weird sense of humor) she was laughing so hard and she said, "You are right Mom, your Alexa seems stupid".  Then she said, "You have to ask it in the right way".  I said, "Well, when I google something I don't have to be perfect and the googler (get that .... googler...Ha) doesn't mind how I word it and comes up with the right answer"!

Try it, google something and you'll see.  A lot of people are nervous about going places on the internet.  But here's something else I've found.

I love, love all Apple products.  My laptop is Samsung (my son-in-law gave it to me).  I have 3 Apple IPADS (don't ask).  I've found that when I want to feel 'safe' about a place I'm googling, i.e. bank, etc, I only go to it on the Apple laptop.  I also do that with questions I don't want to get a bunch of junk back on.

For instance, you know I wear a wig (only when I go out) I'm conceited, so it's easier to google the wig stuff on the Samsung.  Now I am constantly shown wigs, wigs here, wigs there, they show up on every other website I go to.  Drives me crazy.  It's obvious about leaving cookies here and there, I know that.  However, it doesn't happen much when I use the IPADS.  My son-in-law said Apple does a better job of protecting their stuff.  I only know what I see.

I think YOU think I'm better at this stuff than I am.  Many of you are much better than I am at coming up with the right answers.  I mess up.  I sometimes mix up what I read and come on here and mess up....but there's always someone who comes on and tells me how I messed up.  Ha!  Sometimes I think people go patrolling just for things like that....then I realize the just like to have things be right....nothing wrong with that.

Love you Ms Foxxii....Heart

If you think an Echo is only good for Googling things, then of course you wouldn't understand why people would pay for one.

But that's definitely not all you can do with an Echo (or Siri). An Echo can also play music - anything in the Amazon Music catalog, play Audible audio books, place Amazon orders for you, give you a weather report, give you the highlights of the day's news, and run an entire connected home - all without you ever having to boot up a computer or touch anything. It's great if you have your hands full or dirty. If I'm cooking, I can  get information from the Echo or have it pause my music or book without having to wash my hands because it's voice activated.

With an Echo, some smart bulbs, and a hub, I can have lights on my house turn off when I leave the house and turn on when my car pulls into the driveway. I can tell the Echo to turn my bedroom light on while I'm cleaning up in the kitchen before bed and in the morning, I can have it turn the light in the living room on before I leave my bedroom. If I add a smart thermostat to my house, I can tell the Echo to change the temperature without even having to get off the couch or out of bed. As you add more things, you can control more things. You can even give it a single command to dim the lights and turn on the TV so you can watch a movie.

And if you're disabled with low vision or mobility issues, imagine how helpful it is to have a voice activated device that does all those things for you.

Apple 1964, if you read through the thread you will see what all she does.
