I just finished using my new 8.1 laptop for the first time, today and the darn thing wants a windows password to log onto the computer. 8.1 has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever used on a computer. I can't even find out how to X out of pages. You are not dumb. 8.1 is dumb. It's kind of like a treasure hunt where you accidentally discover where everything is, but then you can't find it there again.
You are logged in with a Windows account. You need to select "Local Account" and close your Windows account. If I remember, you don't want to use the cloud storage either, so there no reason for you to have to hassle with the Windows account. After you change to Local Account, you then can choose if you want a password when you first start up the computer or follow the instructions above and completely delete the password.
You can get to the Win 7-type control panel by clicking on the desktop tile, then right click anywhere and all your Win 7 controls come up. Something I learned today by going to HP.com help.
