Exactly!! I very rarely use my laptop anyway. The only time I do is when my IPad is charging. I have enough passwords to remember let alone use another one just to use my laptop.

Re: How do I bypass password

You are not dumb. I just finished using my new 8.1 laptop for the first time, today and the darn thing wants a windows password to log onto the computer. 8.1 has got to be the dumbest thing I've ever used on a computer. I can't even find out how to X out of pages. You are not dumb. 8.1 is dumb. It's kind of like a treasure hunt where you accidentally discover where everything is, but then you can't find it there again.

Re: How do I bypass password

Just finding the Control Panel in 8.1 is by sheer luck.

Re: How do I bypass password

When you want to "X" out of pages, press the Windows key. It's the one with the flag symbol. You also press the Windows key if you want to toggle between the desktop and tiles. There is a built in user guide if you need it.

Having a password to log onto a computer is a smart thing to do. If the computer is stolen, the thief or the person who buys it from the thief won't have easy access to your personal data.

Re: How do I bypass password

Here's what I did to bypass the password requirement:

Press the Windows key and type netplwiz. You need to get into User Accounts. Or go to User Accounts on your own, if you can find it.

When the User Accounts Control Panel shortcut appears in the search results, select it.

Choose the account you want to sign into automatically, uncheck the option "Users must enter a user name and password to use this computer," and click OK.

Enter your password twice, click OK again, and when you restart Windows you'll go straight to the Start screen.

If you want to boot your 8.1 computer directly into the Desktop (bypassing the Start screen):

Right-click the Taskbar

Choose Properties > Navigation

Check the box for "When I sign in or close all apps on a screen, go to the desktop instead of Start" and click OK.

This will take you directly to the Desktop instead of the Start screen when you turn your computer on.

Re: How do I bypass password

I had Googled, too, and came up with it. When I tried it, it worked, so I knew it was OK.

Glad it worked for you, too!

Re: How do I bypass password

Thanks everyone! I was just going to google for that info. I'm setting up our desktop for DH and for his account wanted it easy in/out. All private info is in my account with password. BTW, he knows the password, in case anyone questions, but he wants what he was used to on our XP, especially at 4 am before he gets ready for work, or 9 pm after he gets home.
