Help please with Time Warner digital adapter connections

I've always hooked things up myself without any problems, but am a little confused about the proper way to correctly hook this adapter up and still be able to use my Magnavox DVD/HD recorder. I'm getting slightly confusing answers from TW (nothing unusual) and thought I'd reach out to people on this forum.

I haven't received my digital adapter yet, but the diagram from their site shows the following connections on the back of the box: cable input, TO TV output, HDMI output, and the channel 3/4 selector switch. My understanding is that I would connect the cable from the wall to the adapter, use a coxial to connect from the adapter to the DVR (don't think I can use the HDMI cable to go from the adapter to the DVR since both of those are HDMI outputs), and then, I guess, another coaxial from the DVR to the TV (or is this where I could use the HDMI?). Could anyone tell me the correct way to hook these things up? (I looked online at their manual and it omitted a few details.)

Also, once I get this hooked up and activated, would I still be able to use my DVR to do timed recordings while watching another channel by simply changing my input as I do now? Thanks for any help with this. I hate to feel so dumb, but I know of two other people (one who normally knows exactly how to do this stuff) who had trouble hooking their adapters up and they didn't even have a DVR to connect. One finally had TW come out, and that tech couldn't hook it up right either!
