Budget computers are very inexpensive these days. As posted, if you don't do a lot of gaming, video/photo editing and need a lot of storage, a chrombook may be all you need. If you have a good credit rating, most companies have a payment plan to fit your budget.
I've been posting for years, the best way to get more life and use out of an old computer is to put it back to factory condition. It takes time, mostly for all of the updates, but can be done even by someone who isn't computer savvy.

I do not know what version of Windows you are using. Windows Vista goes to EOL status and no more security updates in 2017.

If you plan on buying a budget friendly laptop, you need to see the display in a store. You need to see what text looks like. Is the display's native resolution the best for your eyes.

Nutmeg is right about the resolution of the screen. I have a 4 year old Toshiba laptop and I upgraded to the model I bought due to the better resolution. The model just below that had all the other specs I needed but I didn't mind paying more for a better screen resolution. When I use the laptop I can see the print clearly and it is easier on my eyes. I didn't upgrade to Windows 10 yet but did
set-up my son's new laptop for him with Windows 10. It is pretty easy to navigate but I will stick to my Windows 7. I mostly use my iPad now and the resolution on iPads are awesome.

I'm talking about restoring your computer to its out-of-the-box condition. If you do that, you'll need to reinstall all of the updates. It's easy to do if you have the restore discs that came with your computer or you made when the computer was new.
