Re: Help I think Ive been hacked

[ Edited ]

My desktop got hacked once. The perp had remote control over my computer. I could see the cursor moving around on the screen but I wasn't the person moving it. Money was stolen from two of my accounts. The perp came in through one of my financial accounts, not sure exactly how. I spoke with both financial institutions and they told me they were going to pause my accounts so even I couldn't use them until the problem was resolved. The only thing I could do was to turn off the power to my desktop and unplug it from the wall until I could fix the problem.

I spoke with a friend who knows a lot about techie stuff and they told me to do a complete removal of the operating system (Windows), wipe it clean and then reinstall it. Apparently there was some kind of malicious software installed on my computer where it allowed for the perp to access my computer from some remote location. So I did remove and reinstall the operating system, got my money back and things are back to normal. But it wasn't as easy as it sounds. I lost some files and the reinstallation of the operating system wasn't smooth going. Took a long time and then I had to re-do all the other things I had before the incident happened. What a mess that was.

yes @geegerbee  I would call the geeks.  They are the best!

They will take over your computer and you will see the cursor move around via phone. They will tell you how long it will take and go cook or do something else.  At first it seemed weird watching them in there.

Or you can enjoy a home visit which I prefer.  I'm a member of Best Buy so do have great options for the geeks.  I love home visits.  They came here when I purchased a new PC.  Were done in about 20 minutes.  Everything stayed in place and I was good to go as if nothing had to be navigated or screwed up.  It was like I was on my old PC. But a more modern updated version.

@geegerbee

Microsoft authorized technician and would take over my computer

ugh!  I'm sorry that happened to you.

This guy is great.  He uncovers spammers and hackers.  Check out this video where he uncovers a Geek Squad scam.

You Tube.  Name of video...

Did he take it too far?

Re: Help I think Ive been hacked

@geegerbee  So what happened?  Did you address your concern?

Honestly, unless I am missing something I don't see a cause for alarm.

When you refer to an AI bot, is that what answered the HP line?  Was it a phone call of help through the internet?

Why do you think the technician would have all your information and passwords?  Did he access them while he had control of the computer?

You probably just needed a printer driver from hp or an upgrade to the operating system (Microsot maybe in your case?), which I think microsoft charges for.  I always get printer drivers free from the printer website.  Sometimes the operating system and the printer driver become incompatible, and one needs to figure out what goes with what.

Not sure what the foreign ip address issue is about.  Did he mean your computer had a foreign ip adress?  Is your computer part of a network, meaning other computers in the home?  Do you have a VPN that maybe masks your IP address?  This is a common thing, unless I am missing something.

I am an apple person because I think they are safer.  I prefer to call over the phone when I need tech help for something I haven't been able to figure out on my own.  It is common for the tech to request access to the screen, and sometimes take control.  But I watch what they are doing.  At no point do they see my personal information or passwords.  That has never been necessary.  They will see what I have open on my screen, so I try my best to make sure is nothing sensitive.  The apple people are usually very helpful.

Hope everything worked out OK.
