@m0rgan

You're absolutely right, coming from someone that's had my CC hacked twice!

It's a real PITA, now, I do what you do!

Re: HP Computer Scam Calls

[ Edited ]

@qvcaddition    Your story sounds about like my mom.  I'm not the most tech savvy person either, so this has had me a nervous wreck too.  She did hang up just in time.  I changed her passwords just in case though and took her banking card information off of a couple places she'd ordered from.

Like yourself, she doesn't keep any relevant information on her phone either, thank goodness.

Im so glad you were able to get your computer and accounts straightened out.  But I'm so sorry you had to go through so much trouble alone.  I know you must've been so scared about this.  I would be too.

Thank you so much for your response.  I really do appreciate it.❤️

Re: HP Computer Scam Calls

@cheriere My adult son is a computer geek himself.  Builds his own custom computers and, whenever, if ever, I have any issues on my laptop, he's right there to fix it or identify a scam.  He always told me, if one of those screens come up that looks very authentic, and that your computer is being locked down, infected, etc. like your mother had DON'Tclick on anything.

  Tell her not to panic. Just shut the computer down.  All you have to do is hold down the button you turn on your computer with (Power button) until it shuts off by itself. It's a forced shutdown and is fine to do.   From that point, she can turn her computer back on, again,  using the power button, and all is good.

@cheriere  so glad you were able to get wind of what had happened early on!

And that you're mom could convey the details, my mother would not be able to

do this. Extra stress I'm sure you don't need! I'm keeping my fingers crossed that

it's been fixed.   Malibu

Thank you both for sharing and your kind words.  This has certainly been a disaster of sorts.  Could be much worse though, so I'm keeping my fingers crossed

@cheriere  While these scammer prey mostly on the vulnerable, sometimes they're good enough to fool even the most careful, cautious people.

Since she called them, they now have her phone number. Tell her not to answer calls from any number she doesn't recognize. Also, open her Programs and Features screen. Click on where it says Installed On, so the most recent date is first. Check to make sure nothing questionable was recently installed.

I'm sure an easy target too as I'm not very tech savvy.  Thankfully, I haven't had any issues like that with my iPad.  I may get her one so it's not as easy for this to happen.

@cheriere  I hope you have good virus software on it. That sounds like malware or a virus. I hope it is not. When I had an HP computer I had an issue similar and had to being it to the geek squad to have it wiped so I could even use it again. Not fun. Good luck.

@cheriere

Do you not have Norton Protection or some kind of antivirus?

Oh I'm sure some know it all will come gunning for me, they usually do, as they have all the answers..

I just hope you have a good protection on her computer and not anything that claims that came with it when purchased. Its usually a cheap one..

When I first got my laptop, it came with one installed, it was the worst, had problems with it all the time. Finally I uninstalled it and went with Norton...

If you do, make sure you also get the VPN....This way they won't know her location either,

If it ever happens gain, just shut down the computer immediately, thats what they told me to do is it ever happened,

Got the Norton,, no problems...

Good luck
