@89135 , I have never had to.

I have another garage door opener question if @89135  will permit me to go OT.

The garage door opener will open the door but not close it.  I have rye-programmed with no success, lined up the lights at the bottom, etc.  Do I need to replace it?

@hckynutjohn , do you know?  Anyone else?

Any advice appreciated!  LM

How do you close your garage door? Since you didn't mention this was a remote control problem, I am thinking it won't close even using the AC wiring.

I have had this happen on 1 of our openers. What happened was the opener did not fully open the door. It has to open it far enough so the chain engages with the opening pin.

In other words, in my case, the opener would still go through its opening cycle, but it was not engaged with the pin that connects the opener to the door. The pin has to lock into the chain, or it is not going to do anything but cycle.

I physically pushed the garage door further back until I heard and saw the pin connect to the chain. I fixed it by lubricating the chain and other moving parts on the opener. Had to make sure the pin was dropping into the slot on the chain that connects the chain to the opener motor.

If the motor isn't going through its cycle to close the door?  Can't answer that one, but I am guessing it's a motor issue that doesn't allow it to reverse its function from being able to open, but not close.

Mine did the same thing...only open but not close.

Found out there were dirty sensors that gave a signal to the motor controller to not close b/c it thought there was something in the way but there wasn't. I cleaned them off and checked for loose wires and all was good after that.

At first I thought it might have been the electronic part which tells the motor what to do but thankfully it was just dirt. Those safety 'eyes' are located at the bottom of the door track on each side.

@SilleeMee , thanks for your reply.  I have cleaned the sensors.  That happened in the past and cleaning them fixed the problem so good call on your part.  Not this time though.  Wondering if there is a loose wire or if it is anything else.  Have to get DH on this one.  It is his garage door, not mine lol!!!

I want to get this done before the snow flies!  If any of you have any suggestions, fire away.  The opener is 17 years old so it may need to be replaced.  How long do they last???  LM

@Lilysmom1

Openers can last 10 to 15 years. Yours probably needs replacing.

@SilleeMee @That is what I am thinking and, if that is the case, probably should replace the two of them.  LM

@Lilysmom1

I had to replace mine not too long ago. My house got hit by lightening and that finished off the old opener I had...fried the motor and the board. That old one was older than yours.

The new one cost me 600, parts and labor. Insurance paid for it.

@SilleeMee  Good for you!  I hate it when the things we take for granted stop working.  What did you buy to replace it?  LM

@Lilysmom1

I replaced it with another LiftMaster with keypad entry on the outside...I love that!

@SilleeMee , we connected with an installer yesterday.  I have an outdoor keypad as well.  A great convenience.  LM
