Re: Free Upgrade from Windows 8 to 10?

Gokat - Ruh roh!  I just ordered another laptop.  It was a deal that I felt like I couldn't resist with an i7 processor, plenty o RAM & hard drive, etc.

So I guess I'll get to see Win10 sooner than I thought.   I'd been watching it for a while and it went down in price, although I think it's pretty much a new model.

What amazes me, and has with the last couple of laptops that I've purchased, is that the batteries now can be 3 or 4 cell and you still get hours.  I always use mine on electricity anyway and just drain out the battery about once a month just for the health of the battery.   But I remember when a 12 cell battery only got you about 4-5 hours.

This computer  with Win8.1 has a 4 cell battery and I get easily 4 hours out of it.

Anyway - YIKES!  I skeerd.  hehe Smiley Happy

Well, NOW you've done it, Ollie! (er @chickenbutt )Woman LOLHeart

I have 10 on a netbook so have played with it a little.  No biggie when it works so just dive in and have fun with it!Woman Wink   I do know that overall the recommendation for the best browser for it right now seems to be Chrome so you may want to read a little on that.  Also, it is designed with the tiles as with Windows 8 so you may want to download the Classic Shell so you can get around more easily to start, unless your new laptop is touchscreen, that is.

I've spec'd out some laptops here, but mine's still up to speed as far as processor, ram, graphics , etc., so there's no need to jump into anything.  Perhaps Black Friday?!?  We shall see.  I'm only too happy to let the boys and girls at MS clean it up for awhile.Woman Wink

Yes, the need for longer battery life really mandated that the manufacturers do something.  They still really overpromise IMO.Woman Wink

Re: Free Upgrade from Windows 8 to 10?

I think there is a touchscreen but you don't have to use that, right?  I do plan to install Chrome, as no matter the browser I always use two different ones.

I would also definitely install Classic Shell.

Thanks for the advice.   I haven't heard much about their new browser but I wonder if one could also install IE.  I am in the habit of using two browsers at a time for a couple of reasons, so if I don't like their new one I would want another one, aside from Chrome.  I don't care for Safari and the couple of times I tried Firefox or Foxfire (I always forget) I hated it.

Yes, you can use the IE browser with Win 10, @chickenbutt ...so download away!Woman Wink

I'll be interested to hear back your first impressions once you're up and running.  Would love to know all the details of the new laptop, but I realize posting here leaves room for all kinds of critique so I won't ask.Woman Wink

Have a good one.  It's hot as hades here, but the installer just left from installing me new A/C  so I'm happy as a clam now...she says as she guzzles half a glass of ice water!Woman LOLHeart

PS...I think I remember that you can disable touchscreen through the Device Manager in Windows 10.  Yup.  Here you go...Service with a smile!Woman Happy

Thanks, Gokat!  Smiley Happy  I super appreciate knowing as much as possible going in.  I'm one to jump in there, check all the settings and stuff, make it the way I want it, then install my programs.

I haven't even gone into finding out what programs I use will be compatible yet.  I am a bit overwhelmed, even still, about the fact that I purchased it.

It doesn't arrive until next week so that gives me some time to get it together.   Ha!  I'm always one for preparing, organizing, and figuring things out.  I can't just go in blind or I won't get far.

@RinaRina---,

Since windows10, I was kicked out of a paid membership gamesite and can't get back, because I don't have FLASH or JAVA,  but ask my computer and yes I do. It is constantly freezing games I am playing.

Uh boy - I know about Flash/Java.  I use a program called "Silverlight" which does NOT work on WIndows 10.  When I got my new laptop 6 mos. ago, w/ W10, it was a problem.  Tech support had to install W8, so that I could use Silverlight.  Unfortunately, it crashes all the time, but at least I can use it 70% of the time.

I'm gonna pass on W10.

Thanks.

I had to get a new lap top it has Windows 10.

I cannot get a driver for my Kodak Hero 9.1 printer.  I'm not at all tech savy.  I find a drivers to down load but I have to do modifications, that's where they lose me.

Rather than try to explain the problem you're having with your games compatibility I'm providing a link that explains that you can opt for other browsers (using Windows 10) that DO support Java and Flash and thusly resume your games membership, etc.

If you don't want to deal with this, you can uninstall Windows 10 from the Start menu within 30 days. HTH'sWoman Happy

Wow!  I didn't know Silverlight worked w/ Mozilla/Firefox.Thanks!

Sounds awesome!  I'm always looking for good deals.  Where'd you get your new laptop?

Edit:
BTW, I've never been able to find any good bargains that included i7.

You all have been as kind and helpful as can be and it is much appreciated.

I KNOW how frustrating that is.  That's Y I've bought my laptops from QVC.  They come with lifetime tech support - no muss, no fuss.
