Windows XP is leaving April 2014. No more security window updates.

Re: Expert Advice on Windows XP EOL (End Of Life)

I built my own computer and purchased Windows 7 from newegg.com a few months ago in anticipation of this. I've been upgrading parts individually over the years but never took the plunge on the OS.

I bought a brand new 1 TB hard drive, installed Windows 7 on it, and just connected my old hard drive as the secondary drive to move files over at my leisure.

Re: Expert Advice on Windows XP EOL (End Of Life)

I dealt with this problem last week. My computer (and probably yours) didn't have the hardware necessary to run Win 8 or even Win 7. So, I bought a new computer loaded with Win 8.

I also got books on Win 8 and I spent last week reading through them and familiarizing myself with the differences between Win 8 and the older Win systems.

I booted and configured my new Win 8 computer on Saturday with no problems. And, I love Win 8. I find it very easy to use. I'm so glad I did some reading about Win 8 ahead of time. It made the switch so much easier.

I chose a laptop with a touch screen, and I'm glad I did. Touch screen in some places is much easier than mousing around. You don't need a touch screen, everything can be done by mouse, but touch is easier.

I really don't think there are any alternatives except to switch to Win 8 and that probably means a new computer. You can go to the Microsoft Win 8 page and check to see if your computer can run Win 8, but chances are it won't be able to. When I ran the check, I got a list of about 50+ things I had to upgrade or change. It was easier to buy another computer.

But now, I'm glad I did. The new one is tons of fun. New computer that meets was needs was inexpensive, < $400

Re: Expert Advice on Windows XP EOL (End Of Life)

WinXP will still run without them....I actually turned off the security updates on my WinXP computer because it was always causing my computer to freeze/lockup after their update...that computer is old but still works great...I did break down and got a newer PC last November for gaming but my old WinXP still works great for basic word/excel files, pictures, etc.

My old PC would have run Windows7 32 bit if I updraged it but not 64bit so I opted to get the newer PC while I was still able to buy one with Wondows 7 on it.

Re: Expert Advice on Windows XP EOL (End Of Life)

Windows XP was their best OS and will never be topped. I ran two network servers and 36 workstations with that OS for many years and if there was a problem, it was never XP.

Vista was a disaster, and it has been ever since. Their new operating systems are for the neophytes who know nothing about real computing and they get worse and worse. Sometimes it's not a better way to go to cater to the lowest common denominator.

[No insult meant to those who love the simple touch screen, etc. technology. I am an old fogie who taught myself DOS in 1980. Windows was hard enough to adjust to, but I got to like XP, it was necessary once we were running networks. However, I enjoyed having only to update my two network servers instead of having to update 36 workstations every time there was a program update on any of our programs and missed my DOS menus for a long time.]

It is suggested you disconnect your Window XP machine from the internet.

I wouldn't use that computer to go on the internet without your security updates. I guess it would be okay to use for pictures, excel, and word...but don't access the internet with any of that stuff. But if you use email or go online anywhere you will be at serious risk for virus and hackers. I couldn't tell by what you wrote if you knew this, so thought I would mention it.

My old netbook runs XP. I will use it til it dies, without the updates.

I while back, I bought a full size laptop, while I could still get one with Windows 7. I am hoping by the time I need something else, they will have done away with Windows 8.
