Another old lady of the DOS vintage! LOL!! You are right about Windows. We are in the process of making the leap to Apple. We've run Windows for work for these many years and don't see a need for it in retirement years.

On another note, at the local mall, the Microsoft store almost always has more employees than customers and Apple is jam packed. Not to start an argument here, but making observations. We are going to get a cheap PC to run the router--maybe, or jump ship totally in the next couple of months. I'm saying from my beloved Apple Mac Book Air!

I while back, I bought a full size laptop, while I could still get one with Windows 7. I am hoping by the time I need something else, they will have done away with Windows 8.

An infected netbook can spread a virus into your network, and infect your Window 7 machine. You may want to buy a nice tablet.

Not on the netbook. I just keep it handy to check the weather, look at an item online, etc. I never entered any financial info, never use it to complete a transaction and it's not networked.

It's too heavy to carry around out and about. It's just still around until I finally get off the fence on a tablet, LOL

N/M....I called my Comcast Cable Co., and they said I will still be supported even though I have XP. I have Norton Antivirus with them. My post # 28 in detail. I feel much better about this.

Please look on the thread in Electronics, entitled "Might Need A New Computer - Any Thoughts on an All in one desktop". Free Spirit gave some advice on posters with XP (her post number is #39) and I am post # 40 with questions about this.

I tried my best to answer on the other thread. I think if you continue use the computer with XP after they discontinue the system security updates you will leave yourself vulnerable.

I am not an expert but this is what I learned from my nephew whose job is working on computers etc. We had 2 computers, 1 desktop and 1 lap top that had XP. He warned us about the No security info. We bought 2 new computers. Desktop and laptop both have Windows 8. We bought them from Best Buy and signed up for Geek Squad. They came out and installed the new computers and gave us a lesson in how to use Windows 8. I have called them a couple of times as the help line is open 24/ 7. You have to pay for this any time help.

If you keep one computer that has XP and have one that has something newer like Windows 7, 8, the XP version can infect your other computer if you have a router to both computers. I at first missed my XP ( especially Outlook Express ) but now I have peace of mind. To those who are afraid to adjust to Windows 8, let me tell you it is possible to teach an old dog new tricks. I spent hrs teaching myself after reading educational info on the internet, watching UTubes on how to use Windows 8. I am 74 and my husband is 83 and now after a couple of weeks, we are quite adept at navigating Windows 8. It really helped to have the Geek Squad man set it up. There is a way to do it so you don't have all the tiles and can have the icons ala Windows XP.

Buy a printer now, if you need to. You can still download drivers in the MS website. The cheap HP TSV from a few weeks ago will work. That way you can get a printer, because the printers coming out in the near future won't be compatible with XP. Maybe some of the antivirus companies will still work with protecting XP.
