Doorbell w/ camera?

[ Edited ]

What do you need to use one? I do have internet- how would I "play back" if I needed to see if someone stole a package (bite your tongue! lol!) or even who's out there? Cost? any suggestions on them? DH thinks they cost too much so ?

TIA!!

I have 2 Ring doorbells.  I can access the video either from one of my computers or my iPhone.  I like knowing I can answer the door when I'm not home to give the illusion I am home.  I can also see if anyone is on my property. Thieves now recognize Ring doorbells, know they are being recorded and it does act as a deterrent.

I also have a security system, SimpliSafe, and like having the extra protection.   One good thing about Simplisafe, it's a cellular connection not through the phone or cable lines.  A would be thief can't cut the line to disable the service.

We have a ring 2 doorbell.  You can have a conversation back and forth without answering the door.  That helps when someone is selling something. Also we have ours hooked up to the local police dept.  We get notifications if something is happening in out neighborhood.  We have given (and you must givee them premission) to tap in our doorbell if they are looking for anything suspicious.

Mostly I feel safer, becasue I don't have to open the door.

Criminals are pretty inventive.

Yesterday I saw a video online, where the criminals wearing masks actually stole the Ring doorbell first (presumably so they wouldn't be identified), then the packages.

We can only TRY to stop them and hope to give ourselves some piece of mind, sigh.

We have a ring doorbell...but have noticed most people never use the doorbell.

With the Ring Doorbell you need to pay a monthly service in order to save and view those videos which it takes.  That isn't advertised as part of the selling tactic.

I get messages all day long stating there is motion at my door and 99% of the time it is a car driving by.  We  have changed the sensitivity to the lowest possible and cars still set it off.

You don't have to pay for Ring viedeo's. If you want to keep them in the cloud you pay $3.00 a month.

If you want to keep only certain ones, it is stored for 7 days and you can just download it (I email the ones I want to keep to myself, then they just sit in my email) before it deletes it. $3.00 a month is a not bad price.

They are very sensitive, and in the "teaching videos" they have either on the app or online, they acknowledge that if you live close to the road, it will alert to cars going by and it explains why (something about the heat that cars put off, the doorbell reads "heat", as in bodies or cars).

I  have mine set to as close to the house as possible and it still sees every car going by. Just shut the sound off in settings for the notifications for each app in your phone (not on the doorbell app) and it will still show on your home screen but you don't have to listen to it.

It catches my eye if phone is just sitting on my desk but I don't have to listen to any chirp, ding, roar or whatever sound you have on your phone.

The doorbell itself will still ring on my phone, just not every movement sound.

They sometimes need a router range extender, depending on where in the house your router is. If there are many walls, or a kitchen (kitchens interfere with signal a lot because of appliances) the signal has to go through, it works much better if you put a range extender in the room closest to the doorbell. They are not expensive and just plug into an outlet.

My only desire for this doorbell is that future models (I have the original) give you the option to set the number of seconds to record. Mine only records 20 seconds, which is not very much. It records for 20 seconds, then pauses paying attention while it goes off to upload it, by that time whatever made it alert is gone. Not a problem if it is just a car, but it is a big problem if someone is walking around your property.

Does anyone make one that does not need a smart phone, tablet, computer or wi-fi?? How about one that stores it's own vids on a SD card? I don't want to have to use wi-fi.

Right now I don't need one. My neighbor across the street watches my deliveries.  She will call my DH if they pile up. LOL  she's a recent widow.  No harm done.
