I think I need to get a document scanner for important papers.

I do NOT know how to use Excel and don't want to learn.

My question:

Are these scanners complicated to use as far as finding the document once you scan it in? Also where in the computer does it go? I like using Microsoft Works ...could it go in there, or maybe Microsoft Word?

My thought is to scan in my documents and then save them to a zip drive or something in case the computer crashes.

You all have been a big help to me in the past....any help?

You are probably best finding a scanner that will let you save your documents in a PDF format, which most people can use. It is easy to save. Once the file is in your computer you can drag it anywhere you like.

You could save your documents to one of the online/cloud services too such as Google Drive or Dropbox as well as a flash drive.

Hope this helps

Just stay away from any product that uses a propriety format like that Neat Desk (?)

There are printers that have scanners built in and they come with their own software and are very easy to use

I'm a big fan of the Magic Wand. I have one and it's easy to take with me to things like family reunions. If someone brings a scrapbook or loose pics we can easily scan the entire page and then save all of them to the computer later. Works for documents too like jackthebear said. I've used it for business as well as personal and it's so easy to keep on hand. The problem with flatbed scanners, like the ones that are part of the printer, is that you can't easily take it with you and you have to bring the item to the scanner. With the wands I can scan a picture on the wall, scan a fabric covering a sofa, etc. Very versatile!

I have 4 scanners. I flatbed scanner only/1 scanner in my All-in-One and 2 VuPoint portable scanners. The 1st VuPoint I bought is the type that you have to move over the scanned object. While this is nice, it can also be a pain making sure of the background on which you are doing the scanning. I've had to crop too many things I scan because of the scan of the background.

Recently bought the VuPoint portable scanner Pro. This is the one where you feed the documents into it and it automatically pulls them through. Since I have got this one I have not used any of the other 3 scanners. This one you can take with you into another room and just scan away. It came with an 8gm micro SD card. It also will scan up to 1200dpi in either .pdf or .jpg files.

Came with software that you can use so it will automatically place documents in folders that you can readily access by just typing in a word or a few letters. I don't use this because I didn't want to spend the time figuring out exactly how it works. I prefer making my own folders and naming them and I have never had any problem finding the files I scan.

Bought this over on hsn and for less than a hundred bucks to me it is worth every penny I spent.

Your printer doesn't scan? Most do now days. You will need to install the drivers for scanning if you haven't already.

When you get into the scanner settings, you should have the option to set a default folder or drive to save your scans. If not, you can always select a place to save you data.

We have an all in one printer that includes a scanner. We save our scans in a folder on the desktop. You can right click the scan go down to rename & name it what you want to. You can make a folder & put all your scanned items in it to make it easy to find. If you need a new printer I would buy a all in one. If you don't need to new printer I would buy one of those handheld scanners as posted in the pics above.

I have an all in one printer scanner fax etc.

But when you scan into it, you can choose either JPG or PDF but it goes in my "documents". I want it to go into a separate folder. Like go straight into "word" or something.

When you use these "bar" type scanners, where does the document go?
