Re: Do You Really Need A Computer

I really need a computer, yes. I don't know what you need because it depends on your use.

My laptop is my DVD player and my tablet has no DVD slot. My computer helps me digitize music from CDs, which I still get as gifts. My computer backs up all my music without a monthly cloud storage fee. My computer has MS Office, which I need for documents. (I can use Google Docs, but the online tools aren't as powerful and don't offer as many options as MS Office tools.) I also play a lot of computer games that require a powerful graphics card and lots of RAM and aren't made for tablets.

If you never use the DVD/CD driv, don't have any media stored on your computer, and don't work on your computer, you might not need one.

Creature of habit, I do have a computer, a desktop that I keep updated.  I like it because it feel stable and in my case I cannot misplace it.  Man Very Happy

I do get all these scam calls from Microsoft (NOT) and I love to play with them by saying I DONT' HAVE A COMPUTER.  I let them go on and on in their strange accent and then I lower the boom.  And while I am at it I ask for advice about what to buy... keeping them on the phone as long as I can get away with it.

Re: Do You Really Need A Computer

I am going to need a new laptop soon.  Mine runs very slowly, sometimes websites hang up, and I have to reload them, plus a lot of the letters on the keyboard have worn out.  I'll be getting a new Gateway router to help give me more computer speed, and, hopefully, that will help in the meantime.

I would like to get a laptop 15.6" or larger (as I have poor eyesight) and I don't have a desktop computer.  I would also like to get a laptop that has Windows 10 already loaded.

I don't do gaming, but I access websites and use email.  I do volunteer work that requires me to use a particular website one day a week.  I also use Word and Excel infrequently, but I do have a full version of Office and the diskette, that I understand I can load on the new computer (as long as it has a disk drive).

Do any of you have suggestions for a good computer?  I'd like to do some research before buying a new computer.  Have any of you purchased a laptop from Costco; and if so, what has your experience been with that laptop?  Thanks so much!

Re: Do You Really Need A Computer

Lyn08 I can't speak to what type of computer would be a good value for you but I can speak extremely highly of my experience with Costco.  I buy all of my electronics there as they come with lifetime technical support and the support is great.  The laptop I have is a very inexpensive Acer.  About four years after I purchased it, the keypad went out and the whole laptop froze.  Costco stayed on the phone with me over an hour trying to figure out a work around, I could not have been more impressed with their service and support (I took it to a computer repair place by me and $50 later all is well and never gave me any trouble since).

The laptop I have now I bought the first week Windows 7 came out.  Mine too is dying a slow death and hopefully around the holidays I would like to finally replace it with one purchased at Costco and has Windows 10 already installed.  I'd like an HP but will probably be guided by my wallet if that makes sense . . . Re: Do You Really Need A Computer

mtc:  Thanks for replying regarding your Costco electronic purchases.  I did buy a small Samsung TV for my bedroom from Costco, and it works just great.

I was looking at an HP Touchscreen with Windows 10 at Costco, but I don't want to make a rash decision (unless I absolutely have to).  I was hoping it would be on sale, but I suppose it's too new to be at a sale price.

A Comcast technician was here today, and another technician will be coming here on Monday to replace my Gateway (router/modem).  I'm not getting sufficient internet speed on my computer wirelessly, and my laptop is probably 13 feet from the Gateway.  That may be part of the problem with websites taking 2 minutes to load, timing out, etc.

We have two desktop computers (one for DH which still uses Vista, one for me which is upgraded to Windows 10) and I have my laptop, which is also running Windows 10 as an upgrade. I do a lot of graphics work for my job and I could never do that kind of work on my laptop...even though it's a 17-inch laptop. My desktop monitor is 24 inches and it's perfect for my graphics work.

Re: Do You Really Need A Computer

I could not live without a computer.  I have been computing since the first IBM two floppy disk drive desktops came to our offices in 1980.  Through the years I have had many desktops/laptops both at work and at home.

I am now using a Dell desktop with Windows 7 loaded (deliberately, as I disliked Windows 8/8.1 immensely).  I gave that laptop to one of my granddaughters who loves it.

I also just received my new ergonomic keyboard and feel like someone just learning how to type!  But I will hang in as I know it will be good for me in the long run.

I have no use for any of the other technologies out there.  I have an old cell phone and that is it.

Comcast free-gifted me with a Samsung 5 Tablet recently (I have no idea why) and while I fiddled with it for a week or so, I have no interest in it, in fact I don't even know where it is right now and have to find someone to give it to.

I will probably keep the setup I have right now for the duration.

Re: Do You Really Need A Computer

I think we are much better off without all these devices. I have them too but, i use them very rarely. I am not addicted like most prople are who have these things.
