Thankyou posters for all your comments. Since I posted my problem,I again unwittingly managed to  press some button that displayed something about the HD channels & I  got things back to "normal". STILL  a mystery how this happened but from the comments,these remotes seem to excel in mystifying!!   Just too many complicated  menus and buttons. There should be a rehab clinic for this device.

   Keeping notes from those posts if & when this issue surfaces again.  Thankyou!!

@Floppo

Glad you got things working. Dish leaves an owner's manual with customers and it has several pages devoted to specifically the functions of their remote controls. If you did not get one, call them and request one. I have read hundreds, if not more, owners manuals over several decades, and this one I find to be easy to understand.

I have a remote control that came with my new Samsung TV set. It has only 8 control buttons, and this is a TV set the has all the bells and whistles. A remote with fewer buttons is not the panacea most might think it would be. To fully understand the remote controls of most of today's multi-function electronic devices, a person is best served by sitting in front of the device/reading the manual/learning 1 function at a time until you remember it. Then move on to the next 1 function.

I have espoused this for years, especially to my friends and family that call me to help them. I always ask them "did you read the manual closely? Usually their answer is no, they just tried to "wing it" by reading the buttons. With multi-function buttons on a remote? That many times leads to a feature that has nothing to do with the buttons name.

hckynut----Thanks for your help. Yes, I have that thick mystifying users manual that is very intimidating & equally as mystifying as the remote for me.  I think ,like age,technology is moving too fast for me & I yearn for a simple life with little bells & whistles.  As long as the tv turns on & off & channels change properly,I'm a happy camper.Robot Happy
