Re: Apple problems, some resolved.

I never had to go through the control center to watch any movies or TV shows using Apple TV until I updated to IOS 8.1. Personally, I like it that way. Since I upgraded to IOS 8.1, Safari crawls. My sister had the same problem, restored her iPad, it didn't help and she bought the newest model. I glad I don't use my iPad for much.

Forgive me since I really don't know much about Apple, but I thought the idea with Apple TV was to watch stuff through your iPad but see it on the big TV? Did I misunderstand you glb?

Yes, it is. If you buy or rent something through iTunes, you can access it using the remote for your Apple TV. You don't need to use any device. I also buy or rent movies/TV shows through other companies or apps. Now that I know to use the control center, I should be OK. It was much easier to tap on an icon within the app and choose which you wanted.

Thanks for the explanation! When I first read your post I thought you wanted to watch on your iPad instead of the TV Smiley Wink

I am glad that it finally worked out for. You probably don't remember, but you did this as,ex process with iOS7, but once you set it the first time it stayed like that. This process has been the same process, and iOS8 didn't change that. But...when you upgraded to iOS8 it reset your iPad with most settmgs as they are at factory. This is similar to why with every update or upgrade we always have to manually turn Bluetooth off. The update/upgrade sets it that way, and same happened with your AirPlay settimg on your iPad when you upgraded to iOS8.

I have a Generation 4 (the first iPad with Retina display) and have been extremely happy with it. This week I finally upgraded to iOS 8, which happened to be iOS 8.1.1. Safari has been very slow ever since. I don't know enough about Apple products to figure out what went wrong. I have a new iPhone 6+ that wants to update to 8.1.1 but since I already hate the software on this phone I haven't even tried to update to it. It's currently running 8.1. The browser speed seems normal on it right now.

Does anyone know WHY 8.1.1 is affecting browser speeds? Any suggestions? Like I said, I'm pretty new to Apple products. BTW, I will probably get my husband an iPad for Christmas since I still think they are the best tablets but it will probably be the only Apple product I buy going forward. Not happy with the so-called "easy to use" aspect. I think it's what you get used to and I think my Android phones were easier to use.

You may be experiencing slowness with Safari because after you do the upgrade Spotlight needs to re-index everything. This process happens in the background, and obviously uses the processor, so you using your iPad and any apps like Safari competes with the total processor available with what it's doing with re-indexing. I did the update to 8.1.1 on my iPad 4 and iPhone 5 and see an improvement. Updates are important to do because not only do they include fixes, or sometimes new features, they also include security items. If I were you, I'd consider doing the update. You already did the upgrade to iOS8, so at this point you have nothing to lose.

Gail,

Try this to see if you can speed things up:

1. Close all apps completely by double clicking the Home button and swiping each app up

2. Go to Settings > Safari > Clear History and Website Data

3. Do a hard reset by holding both the Home and On/Off switch until the Apple appears. It will take a minute or so for your iPad to restart.

iOS 8 did not change how AirPlay works. To get your iPad to stream to a television if the app/movie/TV show doesn't have AirPlay enabled, you've always had to activate it through the Control Center since iOS 7 was released.

Also, I've never seen an update on Apple devices automatically download. Unless I'm missing something (please correct me if I'm wrong) there's always something to read and tap/click, usually an agreement to be accepted prior to download.

Neither have I. Settings can be set to automatically update apps, but I have never seen or read anything that says Apple automatically updates the iOS software.

It doesn't auto update it. But it has auto downloaded the update to my ipads & iPod when I was on wall power. I didn't notice and had wondered why my iPod, etc . was running slow. It was because it was downloading the update (not installing it). Then it is sitting there taking up more room than the actual update would after you install it.
