Can you attach an antenna and try it out while still connected to Direct TV?
I want to disconnect Direct TV but need the local channels. I have a Smart TV that works off the internet.

My next door neighbor has Dish Network and also an antenna. We live in Kansas and soon as a tornado watch or warning happens the satellite goes out! They watch local stations through that and always keep me updated on what they are saying.

Yes you can use an antenna for your local channels.
We have had DISH for 20 yrs. When we first switched over to them they did not even offer your local channels so we had to install an antenna so we could see our local news. We need that in tornado alley.
Our neighbors tree fell on our antenna during an ice storm so we had to remove it. Of course the neighbor did not do the right thing & pay for it as he says he has no money but is able to buy a new pickup, boat etc.

I have Dish Network and I also have 4 HDMI/1 USB and a Coax Antenna Input on my Samsung TV. Your TV should have at least the Coax Cable Input on it. I paid $19 for mine at Target when our local channels didn't sign a contract with Dish. We lost ABC Network, and my wife has Soap she cannot miss on that network. So I connected this antenna to be able to pick up the local channels, plus several others. It picks up the HD broadcasts as well as the Standard Definition.
Just like hooking up the old VCR to an Antenna Input on your TV set, pretty easy. Then just find the TV Input selection the same way you choose which HDMI source you want to watch: DVD Player/Satellite DVR/Receiver, and so on.

Thanks for the info @Nightowlz and @hckynut, this is timely since we're considering getting away from cable.

@Beachgirl42 I see Tivo has a dvr for $399 that you can record your local channels or up to 150 HD channels. The service for the use is free. You would have to buy an HD Antenna & the Tivo.
I'm going to have to do a lot more research before cutting the cord.
I may just get rid of DISH & use a Tivo for our locals plus use Amazon Prime, Hulu & or Netflix etc. Has to cost less then the $125 per month I'm paying now.
