@Mz iMac Thanks for the info. I read the KB Article, I'm good with all the issues listed there. I have yet to uninstall the MacKeeper. It has been on the my system for a few months now. It was recommended to us by someone on another forum as one of the better anti-virus programs. I may have to give it some more thought. Unfortunately even the nearest APSPs are an hour drive one way. I'm going to try some of the things DooBoo suggested about starting in safe mode. I also saw her posts regarding the problems we both were experiencing viewing certain products on QVC. Some of the stuff she was explaining were a little over my head, but think I will be able to follow her directions.

We happen to be a Mac family (iMac, iPhone, iPad).  But that's not the point of this response.

If you're unsure of what you really need, Consumer Reports usually has an issue in which they describe the various parts of the computer (RAM, Hard Drive, etc.) and give you some advice as to what you might buy given how you use a computer.  Then, go to the manufacturers' websites and see what they have available that meets your needs.  For PC's, you can go to big-box stores like Best Buy and look around there.

Personally, I would strongly hesitiate to purchase a computer from any TV shopping channel.  I'm not sure of what I'm getting or that it's the latest model with the latest operating system.  Moreover, the "software bundles" they offer contain products that I'd never use. On my iMac, I have a money management program and the Mac word processing software that came with the computer.

With respect to Microsoft Office.  I believe there is a version for Mac, if you really want it.  We use the Mac alternative (Pages, Numbers) and have no trouble whatsoever.  If we're sending a document to a PC user, the Mac lets us make a "Windows" copy that others can open.  When a PC user sends us a "Windows" document, the Mac allows us to open it in Pages with only a few hitches. Microsoft Office 365 is a yearly subscription deal.  Microsof Office is available in a one-time purchase version.  I've had the same Mac alternative word processing software for probably 10 years.  It has served me just fine.

Hi, @Allegheny!  I do encourage you to read more about the concerns with MacKeeper -- you really don't need it, and it could be the cause of some of your problems.  (You might want to do a search for "MacKeeper problems" and read some of the articles and discussions.)   I'm sorry I put so much into that response on the other thread.  I get carried away sometimes!  Just keep asking questions along the way if you need to, and someone here will try to help.  Fingers crossed you can fix the problems, and I do hope you find a computer you and DH will enjoy!

(eta:  I just noticed the Web Of Trust add-on blocks MacKeeper's official website as being untrustworthy and unsafe -- this safe link has the details:  https://www.mywot.com/en/scorecard/mackeeper.com?utm_source=addon&utm_content=warn-viewsc)

@dooBdoo

Just an update.  I purchased a precision bit and driver set to remove the screws to the battery pack to I could get to the trackpad.  Unfortunately I had already stripped one of the trilobe screws on the battery so that is another hurdle I have to resolve.

Anyhow, the bigger news is something my husband tried.  He reinstalled El Capitan and I'm not having the wonky page flipping or trouble with the pointer when typing.  I think the page flipping could be related to a trackpad issue, not necessarily my operating system, but who knows.

I have set Accessibiity to disable the trackpad when attached to my mouse. My goodness it is strange going back to a mouse after using a touch pad for so long.  But it is working.  However not very comfortable trying to use a mouse while sitting on the sofa.

Back to the original topic for a minute. All in one's can be perfectly fine computers. You really want to be sure you keep the vents unobstructed, but that's not a big problem. I wouldn't worry too much about the processor. In most all in one's you're going to get a lesser processor simply to limit heat buildup and power consumption. The good news is for most users any current CPU on the market should be fine for the uses you described. You don't need a cutting edge CPU. In terms of memory you'll generally find 4 Gb adequate, but more is always better. The hard drive should be fine at anything over 250 Gb's.

Hi, @Allegheny!  Thanks, so much for the update.   This sounds like the original download or installation had a glitch, might not have completed properly.   I admit I'm a dinosaur when it comes to trackpads because they seem to have so many problems (no matter what the brand), so I keep going back to using a mouse, but you're right that it's not the best choice in some settings.  I'm glad things are a little better now.  I was thinking about you this morning.   Sending positive vibes in your direction, hoping "all things technical" will settle down.
