Adding Memory to Computer

My Dell computer is running very slow and Norton tells me that my memory is very low. Someone told me not to buy more memory from Dell, too expensive. They suggested going to crucial.com where I can order 2 gb RAM for $33.99. Anyone ever order generic memory? Thanks from a computer illiterate lol.
