Can iPhone 3G be used as iPod only if I get a new phone???

Hi,

I am going to upgrade my iPhone (not sure whether to wait for new release iPhone or just get iPhone 4), and I was wondering if I could just use it as an iPod touch?

Have anyone of you turned your old iPhone into just an iPod? Did you have to do anything special?

Also, any suggestions on whether I should wait for new phone to be released or just go ahead and get iPhone 4? I heard that new release will not be until this fall instead of June.

Thanks for any suggestions.
