@Toppers3Sorry, I do not sign in each time I read the forum... I got an email today saying I have 7 days. We shall see what happens in 7 days. I do not plan on switching over until I have to. If I do switch at all.

i use it as my homepage with IE. i also use firefox and microsoft edge as browsers.
i can get my mail and read my news from aol whenever i like.
have been using aol ever since 1999 and quickly switched to their free services when i stopped using dial up. i did not get that email.
I use their free e-mail and I use get my news from their home page as well.
I did the same exact thing that you did. We used to use them for dial-up service a long time ago, and now we have DSL service with AT & T, but I kept my e-mail with AOL and kept it as a free service.
I didn't receive any kind of notice about any kind of AOL Gold service, either.

Hi @Sissyrose.
That's fine...![]()
I'm not here that much...
I probably drop in every few days now.
I just posted that I have a free e-mail account still with AOL back from the days when we used to have a dial-up account with them, and that I use their home page as my home page now, to get my news and information from.
I have a Chromebook, so that Chrome is the only browser that I use. I don't have a choice, as with a Chromebook, everything that you use is Chrome-based.
Like Sunshine45, I didn't receive any kind of e-mail messages from AOL, indicating that I had to use their AOL Gold desktop.

I got the email about the new AOL Gold. My hiusband downloaded it but I did not on my account. After the stated date my AOL stopped working. Said my version of AOL has been discontinued. Could not get my email or anything else. Called AOL and got the runaround telling me to call several numbers. Finally got on with someone after about two 30 minute waits. Let me tell you this new version is terrible. Everything is slow to load. Sometimes cannot get online. I must shut down and start my computer again to sign on every day. Have to expand emails to read. Spell check does not work. Copy and paste is hard to do. Everything is slow, slow, slow. It would cost me $4.99 a month for this service.
So after a few weeks of this we could not get online at all today. Called AOL and they checked our computer out and told us there were several foreign contacts trying to I guess hack into our computer. They suggested we contact this place to have them removed for $300.00! Luckily our son is a computer wizz and got them deleted for us. So we are going to drop AOL. Not going to pay for all the trouble we are having with AOL Gold.
Our son thinks maybe AOL was selling some account names to make us pay for
AOL Gold now They are making money and are providing terrible service and then want more money to fix it. Don't fall for this. I have some friends and family members who have not gotten a notice about AOL Gold and still have the old version. Maybe they will get to them eventually. Read reviews online about this new version and everyone is discussed with it.
Have had AOL forever. Will have to learn with something else now but that is OK. It will take time but it will be worth it. Goodbye AOL.

I got the email a couple of days ago. They were offering it for free for one month. I was wondering I have an email address with them, will I not be able to read and send email if I don't subscribe to AOL Gold?

You do not need an AOL interface for anything at all. you can just got to aol.com and still use their email.
I do not understand why anyone would pay for this service when you do not need too.

@kcladyz, thanks! Maybe the AOL Gold is giving you anti virus protection and other security measures that are included in the fee. I guess then you wouldn't have to subscribe to Kaspersky for instance.

Well...this morning I was not able to sign on to AOL....no big loss because I am not paying to have it.
I am using IE now and I can check my AOL email by typing in aol email in search.
My pages dont 'hang' and I don't get the "AOL is not responding"
I don't know why I kept it as long as I did.......
