I received a email stating I had to upgrade within the 30 days and pay $ 3.99 a month a little over a month ago. A coupe days later they sent me a email stating that I was sent the original email in error and everything would remain the same for me and it has.

@lizzys My son just sent me an email with a gal who had the same thing happen as you have said here. I sent her answer to AOL and asked them if it was the same situtation for me too. We shall see.
Thank you for posting!!

all you have to do is set AOL as your homepage OR just type in aol.com.
i use it as my homepage with IE. i also use firefox and microsoft edge as browsers.
i can get my mail and read my news from aol whenever i like.
have been using aol ever since 1999 and quickly switched to their free services when i stopped using dial up. i did not get that email.

Wait, what? AOL has their own browser? I've never heard of this.
I have one friend who uses AOL, at least for her email ISP, and she constantly has problems.

I had AOL service, can still sign in and send messages but can't receive replies. I spent two evenings on the phone with their techs in India. After struggling for over an hour the first one concluded he couldn't figure it out, so he hung up on me. They always do that. The second one was smarter and spent a long time with me, thought he'd fixed it but then I discovered I couldn't receive mail. I gave up.
I'd rather have a root canal than talk to AOL in India.

Way back in the 90's when I got my first computer I di dnot know how to connect to the internet via dialup. I was on with their people in India for 3 hours ( yes 3 hours) and was in tears. I asked for a USA Rep and they gave me one that taught me how to use dialup in like less than five minutes. I was so MAD!

Hi @Sissyrose,
If you don't have to switch over to it, then I wouldn't do it.
