120Hz Or 240Hz

I'm in the market for a new tv, looking at Sharp or Samsung. Can someone explain to me the difference between 120Hz and 240Hz (does it have something to do with motion blur)? Also while I'm at it what does 1080p mean? I'm sorry if these are dumb questions but I'm not very tech savvy.TIA
