Something classic that will stand the test of time in the photographs. When you try on dresses, have someone take a picture to be sure it looks like you expect. Sometimes a mirror can be your friend, sometimes not. Also, I don't know where you live but it can be cold in spring, if you decide to go sleeveless be sure to have a coordinating wrap or shrug or something for your arms.
Congratulations.

Thanks!

I don't know why the bride, the mother of the bride and mother of the groom can't confer early about colors, style and length, then each individual shops. Some dresses take 4 months to order, so waiting until the MOB buys several weeks before the wedding may not be practical. Especially when the whole wedding expense gets shared three ways between bride and groom, bride's family and groom's family, talking early and not being rigid about "traditional" practices makes sense to me. My son just got married and we confered early about color, style and length, then I bought my dress before the MOB because I had to order 4 months in advance.

Congratulations! It's a very exciting time coming up for you! I agree that you should check with the bride on colors and then see what her mother will be wearing. Unless the bride is pretty specific you don't have to match, but you want to coordinate. One of my girls got married this summer and the groom's mother wore a completely different color than I did and her color wasn't really in the color scheme. BUT iit all looked good together. She checked with my daughter first and got the ok. If the bride's mom wears a long gown you should look for the same length. You just don't want to clash when it's time for family pictures!
Good luck! I got ideas on Pinterest by searching for mother of the bride (or groom) dress. Dillards and Macy's have a pretty good selection as does Nordstroms. It's NOT too early to start looking.
